Mall Experience

Valley Fair Mall is the mall that I go once, twice or even more a week. However, before the mall work sheet was due, I never really sat down to observe the mall structure, and the people in the mall. Most of the time when I went to Valley Fair I was there just for fun, to hang out, to see if there are any new in the mall. I never really thought of who Valley Fair Mall is design for, what is the difference between floor one and floor two.
After we disgust some topic about Valley Fair on Friday, it totally changed how I think of Valley Fair now. If you take a close look at the Valley Fair map, it is like a temple and it is a loop structure. I remember the first few times that I came Valley Fair mall, I could not find the exit for the mall, everything in the mall looks the same and there many small loops inside the mall.  But one thing that I didn't notice about the structure is the marble floor on the 1st floor and the carpet floor on the 2nd floor. Marble floor and the carpet floor itself might not represent anything, but if we look at the store on the first floor. Usually, they are more expensive and luxury. This combine with the marble floor theme, it makes first floor feel like they are for upper/mid class people. On the other hand, second floor are where the sport brands located, shops for young people.  If we look at the food court between first floor and the second floor we can see that, first floor are mostly restaurant type, food that are expensive and there's people severing you. Restaurants on the second floor are more like the cafeteria style, it kind of like fast food restaurant where the food is cheaper.
As we discuss in class, we figured out that Valley Fair Mall are design for upper/mid class, white female. There is rarely any store that sells stuff for man, and older people. I think Valley Fair Mall should change its style of selling. After looking at the San Jose city fact sheet, we can clearly see that the majority of the people who live in San Jose are not white; in fact most of the people who live there are Hispanic. We also notice that the majority of the people does not have a college degree or higher, and the majority of the people make 100,000 or less per year. Those are the focks Valley Fair Mall should be focusing on, but instead they focux on the minority.
One solution that I can think of for the Valley Fair Mall to improve on is, take out all the luxury stores, leave those stores to Santana Road. Sell more product that are not western. Shopping at Valley Fair Mall, I do not see any store that sells Asian cloths, this may lead people to think that if you want to be modern you have to dress how white people dress. Put up some picture with model that is not white. Almost all the model picture we see can see in Valley Fair are white model, again, they are making people to think that modern equals white. There are many other ways that we can improve Valley Fair Mall. However, the most important thing is that they need to change the mall structure, so that when anyone walks in to the mall they will say this is the mall for me, and I want to shop here.
