Conclusion Windows , Mac and Linux

First of all, let's review what an operating system is. An operating system is not a simple program that you could run on a computer; an operating system is basically the brain of the computer. It is what runs all your videos, games, word documents, it stores all your information on your hard drive, and it is the key for accessing everything in your computer. If you are still having problem understanding what an operating is, just imagine if your brain is an operating system and your body is the hardware. All the knowledge, memories, and skills you know are just something that you installed on our brain, your body could freely access your knowledge, memories, and skill through your brain. This is just like what an operating system could do for your computer. Example of popular operating system will be Windows, Mac, and Linux. Those three operating system will be what we are going to be focus on today.
Windows is the most widely used operating system in the world. The world's 90% computer user uses Windows as their primary operating system. Windows has been around for a while; it is famous for its speed and its compatibility. On Windows you could run almost any kind of game out there as long as you have a good computer hardware, also on Windows you could boost up your computer speed to what your computer were not design for, which is call the turbo mode. Beside the fun part of Windows, it is also made for business and it has the largest software library dude to its compatibility. One other thing about Windows is that it provide good amount of security against viruses and hackers attack.
Mac, on the other hand doesn't not have the compatibility like Windows. You could only run Mac on an Apple computer, which is why you could rarely see a Mac OS(operating system)  running under PC(personal computer, commanly refer to Windows). Only 5% of the world's computer uses Mac as their primary operating system. However, this percentage is changing in a positive rate. On the early 2000, Mac only covers around 2% of the computer user.  Although Mac could not run heavy games like Windows could, Mac is known for its stability, its graphic, and its ability to edit music and video. Under Mac fancy look, it also provides a very strong security  and this is one of the reason why people choose Mac, I am remember few years ago people claim that  if you uses Mac, you will never have trouble against viruses, that is how secure Mac is. Apple spend a lot of money and afford on designing the Mac graphic, it is design to be every convenience so that the user will have best experience when using  a Mac.
Finally, here is Linux. Linux is the operating system that most of the people have no experience with, you could rarely see a Linux install on a public computer. Learning Linux takes time the command on Linux itself takes year to get familiar with. This is probably why only 1% of the world's computer user uses Linux. However, Linux is a very powerful operating system, it is faster and more secure than Windows and Mac, basically what you could do on a Windows and Mac you could also do it on Linux. The only downside of Linux beside its hardness is it could not run games like Window, it is even worse than a Mac. The only games that Linux could run will probably be the programmer self-design game or the default game Hearts and Minesweeper. Linux is also highly portable; you could run a Linux on almost any computers. The best thing about a Linux is that it is totally free, anyone could download Linux off the Internet to use it edit it and even to sell it.
Windows, Mac and Linux there have been many debates on which one is better than which one. In my opinion they all have their upsides and downsides. Personally I would prefer Linux; everyone should try out Linux if they have the chance. However, it takes a little time to learn how to use Linux and it takes time to get use to its graphic. Secondly I would recommend Mac, even know I do not own a Mac but it has the coolest outfit for a computer ever. And finally there is PC, I strongly recommend PC for gamers. On other operating system could beat a PC on gaming.

Linux

Linux. Most people when they hear Linux, they will ask what is Linux. Linux is UNIX like operating system, it is free and open source. Some people will ask isn't all the operating system free? The answer is no, when you buy your PC or Mac the operating system is pre-installed on your computer already. However, it does not mean that it is free, you actually have to pay a license fee, which is included when you purchase your computer.  But Linux is free, if you have the way to get a UNIX CD you could just install it on your computer, or you could just download it of the Internet. Another question is what is open source? open source means that anyone are allow to modify Linux, after you modify it you could even sell it.
There is not really an operating system call Linux, Linux have many distributions, there are some Linux popular Linux distribution  redhat, fedora,  backtrack, uduntu, Mint. Different Linux distribution are good at doing different things, for example backtrack is good at penetrating people's Internet.
Linux could pretty much do anything you want to do with a computer, but there is also a down side to that, if you are a gamer, you probably will not want to use Linux. Linux does not support many fancy games. But overall Linux is a operating system worth checking out.

UNIX

UNIX was created in the late 1960's by Bell Labs. When UNIX first came out it is very simple and small, it was build to run on mini-computers. UNIX is like a huge machine, you have to have an account to log in, it is not like Windows and Mac where you could just log into your computer, when you run UNIX you have to use the terminal to log into UNIX system. When you logged into Unix it might seem like you are the only one that is using the operating system, but it's not many user are online using Unix at the same time, Unix manage it memory very well so it seems like you are on the only one that is using it. It is like the operating system they use on the matrix. There is nothing much to explain about Unix, it cannot run some games that could be run on Windows, it could not edited videos like Mac. However, there are a lot of advantages by using UNIX.

1. UNIX is very good at multi-tasking. If you try to multi-task on a PC or a Mac, you computer will slightly lag when you are trying to open to program, but on UNIX it could multi-task with no delay.
2. Very small and light, could run on almost any machine. It is the most portable operating system out there.

Disadvantages:
1. User have to learn codes and command lines in able to understand Unix. Design for programmers not for casual users.
2. Everything is done by typing, no mouse is needed. So a little typo will have unexpected result.

IWA #5

After reading the about the Zoot Suit Riot case, it starts to make me wonder are we really free in this country? Back then people are not free to express themselves, nor through their action or through their clothing; The Zoot suit is a very good example. However, today people are still not totally free to express themselves also. We cannot wear or act how we want to act, and it is not because it is against the law, because it is against the people.
I remember during the junior year of my high school, one summer I went back to Taiwan and bought a lot of puck and preppy cloth, and I went to get a hair get that looks like this, haft shaved plus I bleached my hair to bright blue. After the hair cut, personally I felt like it was pretty good. However, after later on my parents saw my hair style and they were mad. They wanted me to dye my hair back to black; they said  this hair style and the way I dress make me look like a bad kid. I was disappointed, because I thought they would accept the new fashion for the kids now days, but they did not enjoy my new hair cut very well. However, before I got force to dye my hair back I came to America. The high school that I went to was a private Adventist school, and unfortunately they do not like the way I dress and the new hair cut that I had either. They gave me a warning and it says that I have to dye my hair back to my nature color. They think having a hair color other then your natural hair color is against God's well. But I do not understand why the school thinks that way; it is not like God thinks everyone that has blue hair is sinner. The only reason that I can think of is that the school assume that all Asian should be cute and polite. The teachers back in my high school never saw a Asian with blue hair, so when I bleached my hair to blue it is against their traditional images about a typical Asian.  And they do not want to accept that the world is changing, or I should say the fashion is changing. I believe, if they see a punk with a blue hair they probably wouldn't say anything about it. Our society today makes people think that we have to change the way people act if they are not normal, this reminds me of the video I watched on the Jay Smooth's blog about the extremism, Jesus get executed because he is not normal, Martin Luther King Jr. got into the jail because he is not normal. For my peers, a lot of my friends like my hair style, they think it is cool and fashion. However, some of my peers do not like my hair style too; they wanted me to change back to my normal hair style.
This make me think of a question, why can't we be who ever we want to be. People are judging each other base on their appearance. If you are not following what other people are doing then you are weird. However, there are still some people out there that are resisting the public, they dress up as what they want to dress but most of the time people will not accept their style, just like people did not accept Martin Luther King Jr. and Jesus.  This society are telling us that everyone has to be normal, if you are not normal you will be isolated, the result of this is everyone in this world are doing that the public think is "standard". No one gets to be themselves anymore. Because of this, I started to think that am I really a weird person? I remember every night when I was in the shower, I will turn on the hot water stood there for half an hour try to wash off my blue hair. Slowly, my hair becomes a mixer of white and blond and it wasn't every appealing. Finally, people convinced me, I believe that with this hair color I am not normal. I dyed my hair back few weeks later, and everything went back to "normal".

Informal Writing 4

In the Illdoctrine blog, Jay Smooth have some very interesting video on it. Jay Smooth is speaking from the hip-hop perspective, one can tell from watching his video he talk like a hip-hop person, and in some videos he actually made his own hip-hop music to describe what he is trying to say.  In his blog, he not only grab the attention form the people that are hip-pop fan, but also the peopel to are not hip-pop fan. Mostly, he talk about what is going on in the hip-hop world, racism or something about politc.
The first video that I watched is the "Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr." on Extremism. Obviously, this clip is about extremism. In the video, he talks about different kind of extremism, how sometimes extremism is no less righteous than moderation. Martin Luther King Jr. was clam to be an extremism, at first he wasn't happy about people calling him an extremism. However, after he think about the term extremism he realize that it's not about to be an extremism, like Jesus is an extremism, an extremism of  love. But people think extremism is not good because extremism are different then them, and they will punish the extremism, and want to change the extremism not so extreme.  I think he is trying to say that people can act however they want to act, don't let people change you because they are different then you.
The second video I watched is the "Why am I afraid of Christine O'Donnell". This video is about qualification, everyone are qualify at what they are good at doing. Just because you are not good at studying for example,  it doesn't mean that you are not qualify for other stuff. Christine O'Donnell clams in her video that she is just like everyone of us. However, Jay Smooth points out an very interesting point. I will not vote myself if I am running for politician, if you want people to vote for you, you better be good at doing whatever politician are suppose to do. People are born to do different stuff,  just like the movie Matrix Neo are born to save the world, that is why Morpheus spend all his life time searching for the one, because if you are not the one you are not qualify to save the world. However, you might be qualify for doing something else.
The third video that I watched is the " T-Pain and Know Nothing  Know-it-All". This is a very interesting video, and it's about telling people that  if you don't know something don't act like you have it all figure out. Because it will make you look stupid. This reminds me of some experience that I have,  sometime when people ask me what I think of something I will act like I know what he is talking about, when I really don't. But this doesn't mean that I want act like I know what he is talking about, it's because I want to make him feel like I care about what he is telling me. Anyways, back the  T-Pain video. First, T-pain was ask to say something about politic when he doesn't really know about politic, however, he wants to act like he is cool and all that so he said something that is completely different. Later on when he found out about his he didn't apologize for is lack of knowledge, instead he say that who cares about politician, the world won't change without them. He is very arrogant about is mistake, and he doesn't want to admit that he is wrong.  Which made him look very stupid. We should not comment about the stuff that we don't know, because it might mislead other people. If you only know a little about the truth then you shouldn't talk about it, knowing little is very dangerous because you might twists the truth, and it is better to just admit that you don't know anything about the subject.
The last video that I watched on the Jay Smooth blog was the "How To Tell People They Sound Racist". In this video he teaches us what to focus on when you are talking about racism. He suggest that we should start our conversation with a races person by what they said and what they did, not what they are. He also gives an example to illastrate his point, if someone stole your wallet you are going to chase him down and get your wallet back and punish them, you are not going to chase them down and tell them they are a theif. Threat people that are races like the person that stole your wallet, if you focus on what they are, you are letting them off easy.

Mall Experience

Valley Fair Mall is the mall that I go once, twice or even more a week. However, before the mall work sheet was due, I never really sat down to observe the mall structure, and the people in the mall. Most of the time when I went to Valley Fair I was there just for fun, to hang out, to see if there are any new in the mall. I never really thought of who Valley Fair Mall is design for, what is the difference between floor one and floor two.
After we disgust some topic about Valley Fair on Friday, it totally changed how I think of Valley Fair now. If you take a close look at the Valley Fair map, it is like a temple and it is a loop structure. I remember the first few times that I came Valley Fair mall, I could not find the exit for the mall, everything in the mall looks the same and there many small loops inside the mall.  But one thing that I didn't notice about the structure is the marble floor on the 1st floor and the carpet floor on the 2nd floor. Marble floor and the carpet floor itself might not represent anything, but if we look at the store on the first floor. Usually, they are more expensive and luxury. This combine with the marble floor theme, it makes first floor feel like they are for upper/mid class people. On the other hand, second floor are where the sport brands located, shops for young people.  If we look at the food court between first floor and the second floor we can see that, first floor are mostly restaurant type, food that are expensive and there's people severing you. Restaurants on the second floor are more like the cafeteria style, it kind of like fast food restaurant where the food is cheaper.
As we discuss in class, we figured out that Valley Fair Mall are design for upper/mid class, white female. There is rarely any store that sells stuff for man, and older people. I think Valley Fair Mall should change its style of selling. After looking at the San Jose city fact sheet, we can clearly see that the majority of the people who live in San Jose are not white; in fact most of the people who live there are Hispanic. We also notice that the majority of the people does not have a college degree or higher, and the majority of the people make 100,000 or less per year. Those are the focks Valley Fair Mall should be focusing on, but instead they focux on the minority.
One solution that I can think of for the Valley Fair Mall to improve on is, take out all the luxury stores, leave those stores to Santana Road. Sell more product that are not western. Shopping at Valley Fair Mall, I do not see any store that sells Asian cloths, this may lead people to think that if you want to be modern you have to dress how white people dress. Put up some picture with model that is not white. Almost all the model picture we see can see in Valley Fair are white model, again, they are making people to think that modern equals white. There are many other ways that we can improve Valley Fair Mall. However, the most important thing is that they need to change the mall structure, so that when anyone walks in to the mall they will say this is the mall for me, and I want to shop here.

The Matrix, Red pile or Blue pile?

Although this is like my fifth time watching "The Matrix". Every time I come back to watch Martix , I  feel like this is the first time that I am watching Matrix. When Morpheus offers Neo the Red pile or the Blue pile it reminds me of the everyday decisions  that I have to make. Do the homework, or watch a movie? Go to sleep, or stay up? Go to class, or not? Red pile represents the stuff that I want to try, the stuff that I could risk a chance for. And the blue pile represents the ordinary stuff . One decision I have to make that is similar to the matrix red pile blue pile theme is coming to America
I came to America about five years ago, since then I have been living in two life. I have to get use to the American's way of living, and also not forget my culture in Taiwan. In America, life is surrounded by the tech knowledge, and life is convene. On the other hand, Taiwan doesn't rely on tech knowledge that much. This is very similar to the red pile, blue pile situation.Neo has to get use to how people live in the "real world",but also not forgeting the old life in the "dream world".
I think Neo is very brave. If I have to pick between the blue pile or the red, I will probably take the blue pile. I guess that is what makes him become the one,and I am just another human being. Morphues told Neo that if he take the blue pile, he only offer him the truth and nothing more. However, Neo not only take the red pile, he went above and benoed. He is the only one that is brave enough to fight face to face with an agent. Many time he almost lost his life because of it, but he never gives up, he continues to do what he think is right. Unlike me, I do not like to face decisions. Making decisions make me panic. I will defiantly not be the one that is brave enough to face the agent.

I really like the idea of Matrix. It kind of reminds me of the movie inception. It is very creative. After watching the movie I was like, am I living in the real world, or this is just a dream? Is the chicken that I am eating real? Or it is just my imagination. Those thoughts scares me, I am not even sure if I am human? Or I am just another program that someone creates. The lady that knows the future, she is also a very interesting person. She makes me think of my future. Can I even control my future? Maybe it is all plan out for me before I was even born. Or it is like what Neo believes, we can control our own future. Some how I think that everyone's has their own destany and our like are all plan out by someone already. Neo later one becomes the one and defeat the agent, however, this is not what the future lady said to Neo. The future lady states that Neo has the talent, but he is not the one. Does that mean Neo changes the future? No, when Neo thinks that he is in control of his future, it might not be right, maybe the future is controlling him. Maybe the future wants the future lady to said that Neo is not the one and he is not in control of his future.  Then this will motivate Neo to do something so he can be in control of his own future. However, this is already planned out by future.
After watching this movie it makes me think of a lot of things. It makes me want to go home and finish the rest of the series. It is a great movie.

IAT

When I first started the IAT, I was like this is easy. At first they ask me to seperate fat and thin people which was easy. Then it wants to the seperate good words and bad words. Finally, they mix up fat, thin, good, and bad. It gets very complicated. It was kind of scary becuase it is timed, so I am afaird that I am going to run out of time.
Slight automatic preference for Thin People compared to Fat People.” After answering a lot of question about fat people and thin people, this is what I got.
I think this answer is quiet correct, since I am very skinny, I prefer thin people a little bit more. Fat people do not usually have the best looking face, but however, I think most fat people are very nice, very kind. Thin people are generally better looking, more attractive in my opinion, but they are more likely to be arrogant and mean. The data said 27% people are moderate prefer for thin people compared to fat people, I believe that is due to the media. People are use to thinking that thin people are the people that can wear nice clothes, thin people are more attractive. Even know this is unfair to the fat people, but this is the way how people think now days.
“Your data suggest little to no automatic preference between Young and Old.” This is what I got from the Young and Old test. I think this is also quiet correct. I love old people, they are very nice. Often old people give me a lot of tips for life. However when talking to old people I need to be very patience, because a lot of them cannot hear very well.  On the other hand, young people are more energetic, outgoing. Young and old people both have their pros and cons. That is why I have no preference between those two.
The IAT experience was very interesting, fun, and eye opening. Even know I have the answer to the question in my mind already before I started the test. But it is still kind of fun to see the test result.

Informal Writing

After finish watching the videos, Peter Singer caught my attention the most. He uses stories to illustrate his point. I remember in high school, I wrote a paper that is similar to Singer's idea. I actually did a research about his idea.
In Peter Singer's video, he mentions that the story of a drowning child. The child's parents are missing, and you see that the child needs your help. Would you save her? If we choose to save her, it will cost us a new pair of shoes, but if we choose not to save the kid, she will die. Obviously, most people will choose to save the kid and forget about the pair of shoe, because we are human. We care for each other especially when it comes to taking someone’s life away. However, Peter Singer also brought up an interesting topic. He said that for the price of the pair of shoe, why don't we donate it to the poor people? It could also save a life of a child or even more. This question makes me think about what I would do, donate or not donate? I probably would not donate the money to the poor. The reason of why I choose to save the kid but not give out money to the poor, is because the drowning child is right in front of me, if I don't save her life, it is like I am killing the child myself, and for the rest of my life I will life with the feeling of regret and guilt. On the other hand, we can't really see the poor people; we do not know how poor they are. Or how much help they need. It is hard to care about something when you can't see it.  Plus, I wonder that how can we make sure that 100 percent of the money that I donate will go straight to the people in need? It's is like giving out money to the air. Just because the people in need are not right in front of me, I would not feel a sense of guild if I don't help them. Why do I have to care about them? If I don't help them, someone else will take care of them.
Peter Singer said that "Ethic is about the basic choice we made in our life." However, to apply ethic in the real world might be quiet challenging. The things that you think its right, other people will not essissary think the same. Then how do we determine what is justice or what is not? Some people think that we can only have ethic standard if we believe in religion. Because God hands down a set of commands that we have to follow. And the commands he gave out is justice, or morally correct. However, tend to agree with Peter Singer's idea over the God hands out a set of rules idea. Peter Singer believes that ethic has to come from our self, but it is not what you think is right is right, ethic is what everyone think is right to do.  This is kind of like the Freedom topic that what we talked about in class, there is not a real answer to that.
I think ethic is within our culture, our culture effects who we are. But different culture has different ethic standard, however, they are all very similar. If everyone follows the ethic standard, it will make our world a better place.

Scavenger Hunt!

This is the first time that I play the scavenger hunt, and it was very fun. At first I was like I don't want to do this, this is boring, I didn't know the people in my group, this is just going to be another in class activity. However, after we started  the scavenger hunt, I realize that the people in my group are very friend. After we step out of the classroom people started to ask me to take photos with them, because I saw the Tron in 3D plus I had my Silver Converse on. The game becomes less like a competition, everyone started to help each other out even if they are not in the same group. It was a great experience.(Q1)

If I could have a chance to do the scavenger hunt again, I would just stay in the class room , use my ipad to search everything up, then take a photo with it. I wouldn't even bother going out the classroom (Q2)

At first our strategy was to find the real thing and take a picture with it. But after we enter the libirary we saw everyone using the computer and the interenet as their source, we changed our strategy, we did most of item on the internet. And we also felt cheated becuase we were actually out there searching for two honda civic....(Q3)

Not enough time was our only problem, at first 40 minute seems to be quiet a while. But after running around the  campus searching for bus stop and civic. 40 minute was just not enough for us (Q4)

Finally, we decided to search everything up on the internet for the time that was had left. Which was about 10 minute..(Q5)

Scavenger Hunt definitly involovs creativity, because you have to be creative on sreaching some of the item. It also require some individual skills, but most of the time it requires society, which is group work.  Group work is actually what makes scavenger hunt so fun to play.(Q6)
