IWA #5

After reading the about the Zoot Suit Riot case, it starts to make me wonder are we really free in this country? Back then people are not free to express themselves, nor through their action or through their clothing; The Zoot suit is a very good example. However, today people are still not totally free to express themselves also. We cannot wear or act how we want to act, and it is not because it is against the law, because it is against the people.
I remember during the junior year of my high school, one summer I went back to Taiwan and bought a lot of puck and preppy cloth, and I went to get a hair get that looks like this, haft shaved plus I bleached my hair to bright blue. After the hair cut, personally I felt like it was pretty good. However, after later on my parents saw my hair style and they were mad. They wanted me to dye my hair back to black; they said  this hair style and the way I dress make me look like a bad kid. I was disappointed, because I thought they would accept the new fashion for the kids now days, but they did not enjoy my new hair cut very well. However, before I got force to dye my hair back I came to America. The high school that I went to was a private Adventist school, and unfortunately they do not like the way I dress and the new hair cut that I had either. They gave me a warning and it says that I have to dye my hair back to my nature color. They think having a hair color other then your natural hair color is against God's well. But I do not understand why the school thinks that way; it is not like God thinks everyone that has blue hair is sinner. The only reason that I can think of is that the school assume that all Asian should be cute and polite. The teachers back in my high school never saw a Asian with blue hair, so when I bleached my hair to blue it is against their traditional images about a typical Asian.  And they do not want to accept that the world is changing, or I should say the fashion is changing. I believe, if they see a punk with a blue hair they probably wouldn't say anything about it. Our society today makes people think that we have to change the way people act if they are not normal, this reminds me of the video I watched on the Jay Smooth's blog about the extremism, Jesus get executed because he is not normal, Martin Luther King Jr. got into the jail because he is not normal. For my peers, a lot of my friends like my hair style, they think it is cool and fashion. However, some of my peers do not like my hair style too; they wanted me to change back to my normal hair style.
This make me think of a question, why can't we be who ever we want to be. People are judging each other base on their appearance. If you are not following what other people are doing then you are weird. However, there are still some people out there that are resisting the public, they dress up as what they want to dress but most of the time people will not accept their style, just like people did not accept Martin Luther King Jr. and Jesus.  This society are telling us that everyone has to be normal, if you are not normal you will be isolated, the result of this is everyone in this world are doing that the public think is "standard". No one gets to be themselves anymore. Because of this, I started to think that am I really a weird person? I remember every night when I was in the shower, I will turn on the hot water stood there for half an hour try to wash off my blue hair. Slowly, my hair becomes a mixer of white and blond and it wasn't every appealing. Finally, people convinced me, I believe that with this hair color I am not normal. I dyed my hair back few weeks later, and everything went back to "normal".
